Tax Accountant

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Tax Accountant to join our Finance team in Port Moresby. Reporting to the Manager Tax, this role will lead tax compliance activities across MRDC and its entities, including resource-sector and non-resource companies, and provide practical tax advice that supports sound business decisions.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Coordinate the accurate preparation, review and timely lodgment of GST, salary and wages tax, company income tax, personal income tax, stamp duty, provisional tax and other applicable returns.
  • Prepare and review quarterly estimates and advance tax payments for resource entities, ensuring timely submission to the Internal Revenue Commission (IRC).
  • Monitor tax payments, remittances, returns, tax clearances and statutory deadlines to minimize penalties and compliance risk.
  • Review tax reconciliations, tax-effect calculations, GST account summaries, credits and tax provisions supporting financial statements.
  • Act as a key contact for tax audits, assessments, notices and enquiries, liaising with the IRC, Customs, external tax advisers, auditors and legal counsel.
  • Provide advice on the tax implications of acquisitions, restructuring, contracts, investments and other business transactions.
  • Identify tax risks, incentives and lawful planning opportunities, and support the implementation of effective internal controls.
  • Maintain complete tax records and documentation in accordance with local accounting standards and international financial reporting requirements.
  • Keep abreast of changes to tax legislation and communicate relevant requirements across the business.
  • Mentor junior team members and collaborate with Finance, Legal and other departments to align tax strategy with organizational goals.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • CPA qualification or an equivalent professional designation is highly regarded.
  • At least five years’ relevant experience in tax accounting or a similar role.
  • Strong working knowledge of Papua New Guinea tax legislation, including income tax, GST and other applicable obligations.
  • Knowledge of the mining, petroleum and oil and gas sectors, relevant legislation, Central Bank requirements, and accounting principles.
  • Experience in the mining or petroleum industry, or with a chartered accounting firm, will be an advantage.
